刘姥姥进城

Intimidated
Awed
Stunned
Lost.

She stood there for a couple of moments of which
She felt those tall buildings cowering over her
She felt spying and lingering eyes on her
She felt like a country pumpkin.
So small..

*****

Will you choose to be a raw and unpolished gem
Dull and unattractive yet safe from the harshness in the surroundings
or
Will you choose to be an impeccably polished gem
Shiny, groomed and glamorous yet exposed to the scratches and tears of the most complicated environment?

*****

The Announcement
I hated it.
Felt like hiding my head into the cemented ground.
Anywhere will do..

Monday, January 28

It was a day at the beginning of 1988..
I was awakened to mommy’s call
On a morning of dread, the alarm clock failed us..
A wave of chill overcomed me..
I was late again for the second time of the year..
Almost in tears, I waited for daddy to brush up and bring me to school..
I just didn’t know how to put it across to them
I..I didn’t want to go to school..
The discipline master told us we only had three chances..
This was the second..
I didn’t want to be punished
I fumbled my words
“Daddy, can.. I don’t.. go school today?”
A firm NO was all I get.
“But..but..”
I stopped when I saw the cane peeking out of the corner of the fridge.
And off I was sent to school with a cringed forehead..
I was afraid of daddy with the cane
I was afraid of Mrs Datt
I was afraid of Ms Ang
I was afraid that I’d be made to stand on the stage during assembly..
This sour chilly sensation kept oozing down my spine..
Butterflies in my stomach, I felt like going to the toilet.
I reached school, they were singing the National Anthem..
My dad handed me to the discipline master.
I cried out, unstoppable.
Then I was brought to stand at the stairs facing the assembly..
Afraid, very afraid.
I saw all my classmates staring back at me when they walked past after assembly.
I thought they had the most mocking faces..
I saw Mrs Datt approaching, I cried again..
After the record of latecomers into THAT book, they brought me back to the classroom.
I wanted to hide, unsure of what to think.

After all these self-imposed mental stress, I was down with high fever 2 days later..
2 days MC, but daddy still made me go school..

*****

I shrugged off my daze
That very same feeling came forth that very Friday morning..
Just dread
My heart cringed at the thought of work..
Rather office in general
Colleagues in specific.
Still the thought of MC never crossed my mind at all..
In a way, I was devilishly trained by daddy’s refusal for me to miss lessons just because I was late or slightly unwell.
He taught me to be responsible.

I went office physically
My head at home, on the pillow.
Perhaps the previous day event has left me very drained..
Outraged at the self-proclaimed very important people
We were helpless souls fulfilling some retarded double work.
I was pissed to angry tears..

Those angry tears and bottled up frustrations led to a 3 wholesome days of splitting headaches..

My precious weekends
Ruined

A Clichéd Life

The beginning of a day..
You wake up in the morning brush up wash up and look into the mirror to do double takes on the person inside.
Once you are convinced the person staring back at you is presentable for work, you set off.
As usual, you don’t hit the clock on time, silently wondered if there are any spies around for small reports or if the email on punctuality will come one fine day.
You try to make it up by eating breakfast and reading emails at the same time.
Then lunch time came and you wonder what to eat again.
For the past 3 years, you’ve been wanting to eat something different but you always ended up eating the same food and same portion and surprisingly your stomach does not protest to the monotonous routine.
Then it is back to the cold compartment, and again, aint on time to hit the 45th minute.
Fighting off the Zzz monster is a huge challenge by this time, even made worse if you’ve had a heavy carb meal.
You will then somehow drift into subconsciousness and plan what to have for dinner and where to go after this suffocation.
The last fifteen minutes to work is actually the best anticipation of the day..
Off to gleeful dinner, a stark contrast to lunch.
You will still have to choose your food, but it was a much more relaxed choice.
Night came and you are reluctant to let it end, for it will only bring the dreaded morning here again.
And then the sun will go up and down again.
That was a day at work.

*****

The beginning of a year..
Where everyone is psychologically basked in eagerness to keep to their resolutions or improved changes.
Hopes are high and so are expectations.
The bonus period made everyone forget the previous year’s troll and drudgery, yet for a while.
Then you get bored again it is time to look forward to the next holiday.
You’ll look forward to CNY, a period filled with pineapple tarts, steamboat, egg rolls, chocolates and more tarts.
Most importantly of all, an official two days of legal hiatus.
Then it is time to don nice new clothes and proceed off to house visits for ang baos.
Something which you feel embarrassed about.
Because you’ve had new clothes all year round and how overly aged we feel to receive ang baos like kids.
Little that you know that we arent kids anymore and we gradually come to see the meaningless time spent at drifted-apart relatives’ homes.
A mere sheer understanding that relationships do actually grow apart when they don’t see each other that often anymore.
Then you will start to anticipate whatever public holidays you can find at the back of the calender.
Shopping centres spot decos so attuned to the holidays’ theme, forever giving promotions and forever on sales.
And then you indulge in self-wallow at the short list of public holidays..
And try to spend more at the Great Singapore Sale.
Mid year, no where here, naught there..
You forget the beginning of the year’s resolutions and you yearn for the damn far off end of the year..
So we used retail therapy to keep us happy for a while.
How ironic it is to make ourselves even worse off this time of the year.
National Day comes and we feel patriotic for a while..
Life isnt so bad after all, for a day.
Then back to self pity again that you have yet to accomplish anything worthwhile for you to look back on this very year.
And the same mundane life, with the ocassional perk of an official off day.
Once per month and you feel like escaping into foreign lands.
You start to appreciate the greener grass and make plans for a tour.
Something to look forward again.
Then you go on tour, while your work piles up.
You return home, tired as ever with a morbid mortification that you need to return to work the following day.
Then you wish the end of the year is here right now.
The end of the year arrives, with Xmas and New Year day, bathing in joy and the holiday mood oozes so strong.
You will probably console yourself with the hope of
“I shall do better next year”
and the following year and the following followed year..
The console never ends.
That was a year of life.

*****

The beginning of a life
You cried the minute you see daylight.
Probably you need to breathe, or probably the acrid air on bare baby skin or simply the subconscious fact that you know life aint easy.
You cry as you learn to crawl and fall.
You cry as you scramble to walk and fall.
You cry as you climb onto things and fall.
You cry going to pre school, afraid that mommy will abandon you.
You cry when you get poor results, afraid that daddy will cane you.
You cry when you suffer the stress of the education system.
You cry when you are unable to get into the course you want.
And all these while the whole world revolves around you.
Your parents will ensure you have sufficient food to eat.
Your parents wakes up in the night to put the blanket over you.
Your parents feel hurt when you suddenly feel old enough to talk back against them.
Your parents feel disappointed when you take them for granted.
When your parents are too tired to talk to you after work, they feel remorseful and you are in complete ignorance.
Then you finally graduated and you cannot imagine how proud they are, of you.
And then you start to work.
Suffering the disorientation of the harsh reality, you begin to see the ugly aspects of people.
You see the survival of the fittest, how hypocrites eliminate the existence of one another.
You see how responsibilites are pushed and credits are fought for.
You see inhumans and slaves to money.
You begin to question life, question your lack of meaningful fulfillments so far.
And then it comes to love affairs.
You cry when you suffer breakups.
You pray your marriage will work.
You begin to take your spouse for granted.
Then you have children, dying for them to grow up.
Dying for them to start working
Dying for them to get married
Dying for them to have children
While all these yearns made you forget you are aging.
Then you realise you havent been enjoying the very present, this very moment.
Looking back in life in regret, you wish you hadnt procrastinated so much.
You wished you hugged and told your parents how much you loved them.
You wished you had been there when your children had their school’s family day.
You wished you hant complained so much when you realised you actually forget to appreciate everything you have had.
You wished you had taken better care of your health when you see your doctor’s grim face.
You wished you had more time to do things that you always wanted to do when you had more strength back then.
You wished that you could turn back the hands of time.

This is a clichéd life
but not many attempted to make it better.

All that we know,
Is a reluctant accpetance that
Life is like that.

A Post Event Syndrome..

No mood for work, and the whole cycle's starting again..

Starting to see the conseqences and pitfalls of taking too much initiative..
So what if I'm climbing to management level?
I'm one because the rest refused to take responsibilities..
I'm one because the rest refused to work with common sense..
I'm one because the rest are too preoccupied to act occupied..

After the supplier's reply that shipment has been made to us,
I sent this email out:

"Dear ALL,

Attached is the acknowledgement that we signed.

Can someone please inform where is the DO or packing slip?
It is very demoralising to keep chasing the supplier for the items when the units are actually delivered without our knowledge."

It was very effective.
Because I had an Ang Moh Mr Tall Guy come over in 5 mins after that email was sent,
But it left me very more empty and disheartened than ever..

I hate and detest conflicts..

*****

I do not have the necessary experience, neither will I ever have the luck..
Always believe that 有求未必有应..

But I really wish..
To see this again..

For good.

Suki's Pic of the Day

Irony's Pic of the Day

Formation Spiced

Crab Roe Spaghetti
(The well seasoned taste is actually understated by this plain view)

Maccha Green Tea on paper crepe

Tiramisu Parfait
(多きとすごいね)

At the end of the last dessert, we were kamikazed..
An overdosed overdose of sugar, glucose, fructose, lactose, sucrose, maltose and C6H12O6..

If you peeps come over during CNY, please please please dont open my cupboard >,<
Also did a formation change in my room, number infinityth..
After all these, my arms grew biceps

My Jogging Spree

Muscles aching now.
Wearing a Shape Run inspired purchase, went for a jog last evening.
The second session in this year
-,-
Been attacked by the sloth monster recently, getting lazy.
Dammit..
Fuddup with the rain 搞(ing)爱昧 for the past few days, so I firmly declared that I would jog in the rain that very evening.
Weee..
It did not rain..
The accumulation of a whole week's pseudo psychedelic energy overcomed me and made me run non stop
for almost 50 minutes.

Bwah.
Trying to get a nice back view of my Shape Run-inspired purchase..
But the camera couldnt goddamn focus properly.

Loved the after run complexion.
Works wonder over those chemical plagued facial products..
Tanned, toxins purged, refreshed, blushed and sweat-tricking.
It feels even better after a warm soothing bath on those worked muscles.
Thereafter savour a nice heart warming home cooked meal.

Satisfied.

Saturday, January 5

Coffee Club, our all time favourite..
Never failed to lift our spirits, always tantalising the taste buds..
So so so many memories here..
Somewhat Latin, Italian, Spanish themed and then localised with a tropical tinge
And yet never complacent to retain its unique position in the local saturated Coffee bred market.

We ordered Crepe Champignon (a must try)..
Mushroom and cheese wrapped in a crepe so thinly made that melts in the mouth only to meet the fragrant and crispy breadcrumbs that immediately replaced the insatiable and unquenchable melted taste, all garnished with herbs and sitted comfortably in milky cheese..
A flawless match of soft and the rough..

And Dory with Risotto Cake..
Dory as usual, at its best when tender and hot, this time round served on risotto cake "Rice Cake" and covered with thick and deftly flavoured mushroom sauce. A penetrated fork and knife into the cake gives a surprised generous filling of spinach and mushroom, aromatic to a fault..

And Mocha Tropicana..
Topped with very fluffy and sinless whipped cream, decorated with hazelnuts and chocolate curled fragments; the mocha, a reduced caffine one with an added punch of zesty citrus taste, impeccably fruity!

Yummy!

Sitted at a corner, albeit private, but to a disadvantage.
We had much difficulty hailing for services..
After complaining for a while to the supervisor taking our orders, they kept coming to us.
On the overall, a nice one..

Resolution for 2008: Repay my debts of time

*****

Accomplished things on an "okie note" this year..

Thumbs up: Visited Taiwan, learn to manage people better, catching up with a lot of my dear old friends, participated in Shape Run, took a hell lot of pictures, became addicted to WOW, finally convinced to use masks, bought three big nice white bags..

Booings: Blew my temper so often, never spend more time with mommy, being uncooperative with coll, always late for appointments, spending many bombs online, not disciplined enough to sleep earlier, keep forgetting things, eat too much fried stuff, drink too much bubble tea, snacking late into the night, became a quartered-century old..

Ah, damnned it.
I actually did not accomplish on an "okie note" for 2007.
